Gardening for Gil – FFXIV Gardening Explained and Why you should do it

Gardening in FFXIV is kind of a mystery and the game only gives you very basic information on what is going on. Over the years very few people actually take advantage of gardening and it is VERY useful for both gameplay and to making Gil. The largest impact comes from crossbreeding seeds to acquire gardening Thavnairian onion to be able to sell for big Gil and to be able to maximize your Chocobo.

This link below is for the Gardening website you can use to plan your garden to cross-plant what you want to get. I show how to get Thavnarian Onion seeds but there are lots of things like pets and other valuable items that can ONLY be gained through Gardening.

When he said he planted an onion to get an onion, I lost it and sarcastically thought "I thought it would grow to be a big strong grape"

My chocobo is level 20. Did they reduce the levels available for newer chocobos? AND… Can I plant Thavnarian Onion Seeds in pots in a house? In a FC with a small house and have beat myself up trying to get some Thavnarian Onions or Seeds for 4-5 months. I have followed layout templates on FFXIV Gardening website but between 2 of us working on it over those 4-5 months we have obtained only 3 seeds and 4 of the onions.

Can or will you get thavnairian onion seeds from growing thavnairian onions themselves? Is it self sustainable once you have them growing?

I don’t understand why people recommend to replant position 1 when crossbreeding. Why not just plant in positions 2,4,6,8 then plant positions 1,3,5,7?

Great video! The FFXIV Gardening community is still going strong and the website is still being updated. You can join us on Discord as well if you haven’t already.

There is, in fact, a place for low-grade soil in crossbreeding. You see, Crossbreeding is determined when the crop is planted, so to get the most out of the garden, you use low-grade soil on the first plant, then do the rest with grade 3, then remove the first and use grade 3 to replant.
