Hunting Tips and Tactics (JayPlays)

Hunting Tips and Tactics (JayPlays)

The elk hunt in WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition is designed to realistically capture the challenges and dangers facing wolves in Yellowstone as they seek their main prey.

For players, this means mastering many skills: how to find a herd, identify a vulnerable member, deal damage with risky bite-holds, and when hunting calves, avoid the dangerous hooves of the mother. We asked JayPlays, a popular YouTuber and longtime WolfQuest player and beta tester, to suggest some tips and tactics to help players hunt elk more successfully. Here’s her video — enjoy! (And then go enjoy many more videos of WolfQuest and other animal games on her YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4e517fIfsizbfEf_HsnFaQ )

I want to thank JayPlays and the WolfQuest team for this video! My first attempt at making a kill on an elk calf in accurate mode had been unsuccessful, and I had to abandon it. I had been going in at all the wrong times, not to mention I was in a cluttered forest. After combing through this video and really listening to what JayPlays had to say, I tried again after getting my health full and my hunger at about 50%. I can happily say that I took down my first elk calf in accurate mode! I had always hesitated to play this mode, but this video in particular gave me determination. I can easily say that if it weren’t for this video, I would still be sniffing for rabbits. Thanks so much! :3

The way I hunt is most of the time I try to hunt the weak or the old. And if the elk head is not scared and don’t run I try to test them by growling or biting then run away or act like I’m going to bite but I’m not. And then I try to bite the neck or the belly. I don’t really hunt the babies. What I do to to not get kicked is I run in a circle and try to bite before it turns around. (I’m 13 years old.)

the elk chase music is (in my opinion) the best music in the game.
it really makes the chase more exiting and makes me feel like a real wolf hunting. it makes me happy listening to the music as it’s got a way of making you feel excitement and proudness before the big showdown go’s all out on making feel like you have successfully chased your prey into a corner with your power.

You can also find an exposed elk with low health by examining the ones at the back of the herd wile on the run. It’s best to pull the neck or back legs when hunting elk with low health otherwise the damage could be bad. Also a way to be able to get a good hunt is not getting distracted. So it’s best to take some damage on other packs territory to have a peaceful hunt without a good nip to the shoulder.

The tactic i use is I looking for because mostly slower elk have Less health

  7. GummiWolf on August 1, 2021 at 9:11 pm

Sometimes, I hunt a mother elk, heal up, track down the herd, then hunt its calf, that way, the calf has no protection.

  8. Dacey Warner on August 1, 2021 at 9:13 pm

I killed a week or adults

This helped so much, even when finding elk. When I first started playing Wolfquest 3 it took me ages to find a second herd! I could never smell any elk, I could only smell lots of mule deer and some dispersals. But it was worth it finding an elk herd which already had some dispersals chasing it! And one became my mate. This helped me! 🙂

  11. Sara Ketcham on August 1, 2021 at 9:15 pm

Oh no… They run together now, I can’t just chase one to the den and kill it there anymore!

  12. Harper The Kiv on August 1, 2021 at 9:16 pm

i thought the red points were simply the strength of said bite area, like once the red part disappears u cant bite onto that bit anymore so u have to find a different area to latch on to, is this incorrect?

  14. Deinonychus on August 1, 2021 at 9:23 pm

if a herd of elk go into an enemy pack territory, you can steer the elk by moving in the direction you want them to go in, such as if you want the elk to go right then move to the right side of them and run until you’re out of the territory

  15. Shaun Jimbangan on August 1, 2021 at 9:23 pm

Really helpfull guide, but I have a question. Is it normal for your mate to randomly run off when chasing something? Because all of mine do that a lot.

  16. Brooke Mu on August 1, 2021 at 9:25 pm

It’s especially hard to hunt for me because my computer is pretty weak and my wolf turns away uncontrollably from my prey which is annoying, I’ll get better I’m sure though

  17. JayPlays on August 1, 2021 at 9:25 pm

Woohoo, it’s up! This was a blast to work on and I’m so grateful to have had the chance to come back and work with WolfQuest again! Hopefully some of these tips and tricks are helpful for y’all and your own hunting endeavors! 😀 Huge thank you to the team for inviting me back for another video– and on that note, happy Thanksgiving y’all! <3

bulls are easier when your health is high and the easiest level, i killed the bull because their were no cows, and if i didn’t find food soon, my mate would die permanently cause i play permadeath

  20. Candy 12438 on August 1, 2021 at 9:26 pm

Often I will hunt adult elk, for many of my hunts when u get close to the heard a few elk will actully get close to another elk. When I bite the elk that went to the other elk I notice these elk have significantly less health! I would like to know if more people try this just to verify

i wish i can play the game

  23. Lunar Hollow on August 1, 2021 at 9:29 pm

Extra Tip: Hunt weaker elk, you have a chance to get a successful hunt that way, if there is no weak elk then you can hunt a healthy one or find another herd if you don’t wish to go through the trouble, Weak elk are generally easier to hunt. Bite the elk at the back of the herd when they run first, those may be the weak ones, if not go farther up until you’re sure the herd has no weak elk.

    Is this free on pc.?

  25. ᴅᴏɴᴛSubscibe on August 1, 2021 at 9:32 pm

One tip I have is look at the herd from a distance. If all the others are standing and ones sitting down and just not getting up, this is a clue its very weak.

  26. Dipo Bijak Muhammad on August 1, 2021 at 9:37 pm

it’s so difficult to reach outerflank during a chase in the original wolfquest, and there are no calves. thank you for these tips and tricks, i might change to anniversary edition once i’m satisfied with the original game or get enough achievements.

How do you download or get wolfquest 3?

  36. TheErrorBrothers on August 1, 2021 at 9:48 pm

played as a lone wolf on accurate difficulty, hunted an elk calf, suffered a ton of damage. when i tried to hunt an adult, lets say it didnt end well for sandy. but at least i had saved when i killed an elk so i could move on. and thats why you should know when to abandon an elk hunt to save your life.

  37. N1GHTW0LF on August 1, 2021 at 9:50 pm

My mate Dakota likes to bite the mothers, so that i can get in to bite the calf. He usually does this with mule deer- which are faster and can rush up to you more easily.

  38. ꧁ღ๑Chxrry cakee๑ღ꧂ on August 1, 2021 at 9:52 pm

I have a mate that has a… Different way of hunting calves/fawns, he will hold on to the mother so she cant attack me when i attack the calf/fawn. Its honestly really helpful

  39. HAEDYN RICHARDSON (Student) on August 1, 2021 at 9:54 pm

I believe in the showdown the best time to run in to attack a calf is when you suddenly change directions the mother turns with you then you can charge in at that moment or change directions again and attack, it will then give you more time to give damage to the prey and the mother will take a bit longer to get to her calf’s aid

I love how more realistic you’ve made this game with the dispersal wolves, wolf packs, elk herds, prey, and predators but I also would like to know when it will come to mobile?

  46. Slowly Losing My Sanity on August 1, 2021 at 10:00 pm

My tips : If you don’t have a mate yet, try to aim for the easier prey. (elk calves, mule deer, mule deer calves, hares.) If you have a mate, you can aim for a little harder prey. (cow elk, bear cubs, spike elk, moose, etc.)

  47. william Adam's on August 1, 2021 at 10:00 pm
