This is not 1985. This evolution of the new mind set of a championship or bust was inevitable. It was not long ago when Ryan Villopoto was winning the motocross championships, the entire season would be considered a failure if he did not take the title. It is the same concept, this mindset has already been here.

Barkley is spot on…these super teams will be the undoing of the NBA

  3. Mike Conley Jr on June 21, 2021 at 7:28 pm

There were super teams before lebron.

  4. Monnie Chaos on June 21, 2021 at 7:32 pm

Over 20 years later and we’re still talking about Barkley’s play. Sir Charles, you made your mark. Championship or no championship.

  5. incipidsigninsetup on June 21, 2021 at 7:32 pm

The Raptors didn’t have a super team and they win it all and if Kawhi had stayed for a back to back run and they had won, which they would have within the bubble, then the narrative of super teams being the key to victory would’ve been severely hampered.

  6. David Gray on June 21, 2021 at 7:35 pm

Mmmmm….didn’t Barkley join the Rockets Clyde Drexel,Hakeem Olajuwon & Scotty Pippen to form a “super team”?!?

  7. MII on June 21, 2021 at 7:35 pm

Basket ball is evolving…just as everything in this world..pretty soon all will be super teams……great players should be judged… only with players of their era .. they’re playing under the same conditions and rules ….The GOAT argument …in reality doesn’t exist…. years from now…the game + players will be totally different…with that said..i’m not naive to what’s really going on …I do know that truth and good logic doesn’t matters when it comes to basketball…Bad for business.

We’d all like to go back to the good ol’ days before billionaires were buying franchises, wanting their money’s worth & a couple of rings to show off & boast to their billionaire buddies. Not a fan of "superteams" either but who even knows what that means anymore. Suns are looking pretty "Super" to me, is that a "superteam"? I don’t think of my Warriors as a "superteam" (except when KD was there & I wasn’t thrilled with that…)?

  9. Andrew Durand on June 21, 2021 at 7:39 pm

Why is counting the rings never going to stop? Just stop doing it in your analysis? If ESPN drives that conversation a certain way, others will follow. You’ll never completely get rid of it, but you can get further than you are now.

  10. KingCapricorn115 on June 21, 2021 at 7:40 pm

Sour grapes from a proud doofus who happened to be an alltime great player (and also chased rings on a superteam). This ring convo started all the way back in the early 70’s when Mr. Russell had retired with 11 and Wilt was still struggling to win 2 with guys like Jerry West (logo) and Elgin Baylor (HoFer). And superteams have been around since that same era. Wth do you think the above mentioned Lakers were? Shutup Chuck

  11. Tyrone Bridges on June 21, 2021 at 7:41 pm

To me it’s just like the zero in boxing. They act like once you get one loss as a boxer your career is over and just like you said in basketball back in the day it wasn’t like that look at all the greats mean they all got multiple losses. Manny got six and he still wanted the greatest of all time. To me thats same dynamic plan in the NBA and winning championships.

  12. lotus & Madison son on June 21, 2021 at 7:43 pm

Charles Barkley was on a super team, Hakeem olajuwon Scottie pippen Charles Barkley

  13. Adrian Law on June 21, 2021 at 7:44 pm

That’s why LeBron is no Goat. No legacy just jumping around teams and pulling in super stars.

  14. Leonar ruthyb on June 21, 2021 at 7:44 pm

The complex force ultrasonographically launch because suede curiously glow round a vacuous aluminum. somber, distinct rub

  15. David Salamon on June 21, 2021 at 7:46 pm

    I agree with Charles!

  16. the Fan on June 21, 2021 at 7:47 pm

You tried Chuck it just didn’t work

  17. Maurice Collins Sr. on June 21, 2021 at 7:47 pm

NBA hall of fame is a popularity contest, go along, get along. Well especially these days due to social media

  18. Marc Anthony on June 21, 2021 at 7:48 pm

Who is Charles kidding? He joined forces with Hakeem and Clyde at the end of his career.

  19. Jordache Jordan on June 21, 2021 at 7:50 pm

This is the saddest conversation abt the NBA bc it’s true.

  20. Karl HK on June 21, 2021 at 7:54 pm

Charles himself played on a super team he an idiot.

  21. Peter Rizzo on June 21, 2021 at 7:56 pm

Super teams are awful. How to fix them? Not hard.
Get rid of the max contract and let these players be worth what they are worth.
It shouldn’t be possible to have the three top 10 scorers on the same team.

  22. Ken Wilson on June 21, 2021 at 7:58 pm

Super teams are just frustrating. Having two great players on a team isn’t bad as many teams did before, but nowadays having 3 or more is the norm. Or at the very least, having once great players on your team as well are a thing now

  23. REBUKEE on June 21, 2021 at 8:00 pm

It started on TNT when they CONSTANTLY made fun of Charles for not having rings!!! Those kids that are now in the NBA saw how he was treated and did not wanted their legacy to be the same as Chuck’s! Blame the old skool people for this one!!!

  24. Xman on June 21, 2021 at 8:01 pm

Typical Charles Barkley illogic. Charles says if he knew his career would be judged by rings he would have joined a superteam too. DUH, these guys do know, that’s why they form superteams. That’s the exact same thing Charles says he would have done!

Charles’ conflict is with the idea of judging careers by rings, not with today’s young players. That’s what he doesn’t seem to get.

  25. Ricky BH on June 21, 2021 at 8:01 pm

Your a moron, there has always been super teams look back and analyze the old teams back from the 80s to now and your find all the super teams… pay attention people…

  26. Mali Kali on June 21, 2021 at 8:03 pm

    He did join a superteam

  27. Cake Batter on June 21, 2021 at 8:05 pm

It’s gotten even worse. When sports journalist talk about the criteria for a great player. He can’t just win a championship, he has to lead the team to the ring. Then when they are asked to rank Charles Barkley, nostalgia kicks in and they completely sidestep their criteria and out him in the top 50 greatest players. It’s all a big joke.

  28. RedSnapper 17 on June 21, 2021 at 8:07 pm

I’m not a fan of hero ball that’s how u end up ring less

  29. Frantz Nelson on June 21, 2021 at 8:08 pm

If fans want to know why players form superteams, they can look in the mirror.

Fans have been telling players for decades that if they don’t win rings, they are not successful or great.

It’s a team game and not everyone is going to be on a championship level team – yet we say "Yeah but he didn’t win a ring."

It’s not golf or tennis. You need a great team.

  30. Syirine on June 21, 2021 at 8:10 pm

Charles is rooting against Kyrie and KD regardless.

  31. b7major on June 21, 2021 at 8:11 pm

The same Charles Barkley that joined Clyde Drexler and Olajuwon in Houston claims LeBron started superteams. Then he has the audacity to mention Karl Malone like him and Gary Payton didn’t join the 3-time reigning champions Lakers right after their 3rd chip.
Chuck must be senile at this point.

  32. Robert Douglas on June 21, 2021 at 8:11 pm

Chuck forgot he went to the Phoenix Sun’s with Kevin Johnson, Dan Marley, etc and challenged Jordan for a Title in the NBA Finals. That was a SUPER TEAM CHUCK! Chuck you not making sense. It’s ok for you to do, but wrong for others to try to win a chip? Double Standards my friend.

  33. TheRulersBack18 on June 21, 2021 at 8:13 pm

it’s also hilarious to me that the boston-based media refuses to acknowledge that the first of the modern super teams to come together with guys still at all-star levels was the celtics lmao.

  34. Marvin Johnson on June 21, 2021 at 8:14 pm

These week, macho brothers , starting with stephen a, started this narrative .

  35. nqubeko sibisi on June 21, 2021 at 8:15 pm

Just wanted out of Philadelphia because he wanted to win, went to Houston to join the Dream and Clyde

  36. Dlo brown on June 21, 2021 at 8:15 pm

Ernie Banks didn’t play basketball though

  37. D Clay on June 21, 2021 at 8:16 pm

Paul Piece Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen started the super teams. FOH

  38. Jose S on June 21, 2021 at 8:16 pm

I love how all the offended Lebron fans, are talking about Barkley joining Houston at the end of his career. Players at the end of their careers always join teams with high chances of winning, just to exit with a ring, but unless they come in scoring 30, same as they did in their prime, they aren’t building a super team. Lakers were already a tough team before Malone and Peyton joined, but they still lost to Detroit with that "super team". Tracy McGrady joined the Spurs after they beat the Lebron’s heat team the year before, and that "Super team" still lost that season. Barkley joined the Rockets and they still lost, because he was already over the hill at the point, he wasn’t as young and healthy as KD or Lebron.

  39. RealBlueSteel on June 21, 2021 at 8:17 pm

So Barkley Drexler and Olajuwon is not a super team?

  40. It'sYaBoi Leo on June 21, 2021 at 8:17 pm

Charles Barkley isn’t relevant because he hasn’t won. At the end of the day in all sports not just basketball no one remembers who came 2nd. That’s just how it is period.

  41. Tracy Parker on June 21, 2021 at 8:17 pm

A "superteam" is still super if you take a star out of the lineup. The Heat were not a super team. Brooklyn is a super team. Golden State was a super team. Get it right Chuck.

  42. mexia23 on June 21, 2021 at 8:18 pm

He right it’s all about rings instead of competing

  43. James Twenty-Three on June 21, 2021 at 8:19 pm

    Fat boy salty.

  44. Nerva Louis on June 21, 2021 at 8:19 pm

Barkley is an idiot and liar. He joined Hakeem in search of a ring.

  45. Dewey Ecnirp on June 21, 2021 at 8:20 pm

Didn’t Chuck link up with Pippen , Drexler and Hakeem in Houston??? Guess he was rootin against himself!

  46. DeepDeepSpace on June 21, 2021 at 8:21 pm

Rivalries make players great, not championships.

  47. Roberto Slavchev on June 21, 2021 at 8:21 pm

I agree with Chuck l. But i support Brooklyn because of K.D and the fact i love New York.

  48. David Roseman on June 21, 2021 at 8:22 pm

The easiest was to spot a low IQ sports fan is when they rate a players greatness by rings. It’s not that simple
